Abstract: During infection, viruses may provoke a cellular pathway leading to apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death. An apoptotic response by the host cell can result in premature cell death or abortive infection, thereby limiting the spread and/or pathogenesis of infection in the organism. Baculoviruses of silkworm also possess two classes of antiapoptotic genes, p35 and iap, which may block apoptosis induced by virus infection or by a variety of induction signals in a phylogenetically broad range of organisms.
