Abstract: High osmolarity glycerol (HOG), one of the classical MAP kinase cascades, is essential for cell survival under high osmolar conditions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Here, we reviewed the recent progress on the study of the whole HOG pathway as well as the regulation and functions of the components in the HOG pathway. The study on how yeast cells respond to high osmolarity has provided the basis for our understanding of mammalian and plant cells in response to environmental stresses.
