In recent years, the rapid development of single-cell sequencing technologies have provided unprecedented opportunities to decipher the biological characteristics of individual cells. These techniques are able to resolve the difficult problem of cellular heterogeneity, driving the precision and accuracy of oncology to new heights with the powerful technical advantages. Esophageal carcinoma, with highly heterogeneous molecular characteristics, is a unique malignant tumor in China. There is still no effective clinical treatment strategy for esophageal cancer. At present, single-cell technologies have been widely used in esophageal cancer research and achieved favourable results. This review introduces methods of the single-cell sequencing, summarizing and discussing the latest progress in the aspects such as cellular heterogeneity, tumor microenvironment, tumor occurrence and development, and drug resistance mechanism research in esophageal cancer. It is hoped that this paper can provide novel insights into the precision medicine of esophageal cancer.
