Abstract:

While the central role of the hypothalamus melanocortin system is to regulate energy homeostasis, recent studies demonstrate that the melanocortin system, especially the MC4R (melanocortin recpeptor-4) mediated signaling, functions in organ homeostasis and tissue repair. Here, this short review summarizes the accumulating findings of the expression and regulatory role of MC4R in organs other than the hypothalamus, and proposes that the MC4R signaling is an important regulator of organ regeneration and repair.
