Abstract: A growing body of evidence suggests that redox imbalance plays an essential role in pancreatic β cells, which does not only induce the cellular apoptosis, but also affects the processing and secretion of insulin. Recently, great progress has been made in understanding the mechanism and regulation of redox balance on the processing of insulin and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, which supplies some new ideas and targets for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Herein, we try to summarize the development about the effects of redox state on the processing and secretion of insulin, and as for a further comments to understand the formation and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
