Abstract: Interleukin-17 (IL-17), the signature cytokine secreted by T helper 17 cells(TH17), plays important roles in host defense against extracellular bacterial infection and fungal infection and contributes to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Here we reviewed the histological discovery of TH17 and IL-17, and recent advances in IL-17-mediated signaling and its functions in physiology and pathology, providing perspective on potential drug targets for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
