Abstract: This work was aimed to investigate the expression of different subunits of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on primary culture of rat astrocytes. Primary culture of rat astrocytes were prepared from the cortex and hippocampus of the brains of newborn Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. The mRNA and protein levels of individual nAChR subunits in primary cultured astrocytes of rat were examined by RT-PCR and Western blot. The α2, α3, α4, α7 and β2 nAChR subunits were found in the primary cultured astrocytes while the β3 nAChR subunit was not presented, which provide some evidence for further function study of astrocytic nAChRs.
