Fluorescence of Green Fluorescent Protein was Disappeared in Cells Fixed with Methanol

Abstract: It was found that the fluorescence of GFP in cells transfected with green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene disappeared when those cells were fixed with methanol, whereas those fixed with paraformaldehyde remained fluorescent brightly. Therefore it is suggested that methanol be avoided in fixing cells expressing GFP for immunohistochemistry.
