Abstract: Selective degradation of damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria by autophagy is defined as mitophagy. Mitophagy plays an essential role in maintaining mitochondrial integrity and the survival of cells. Although deregulation of mitophagy is associated with many human diseases, the precise mechanisms of mitophagy still remain elusive. This review focuses on the most recent advances related to mechanisms and physical relevance of mitophagy.
