Abstract: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) belong to a family of transmembrane proteins that recognize pathogens and trigger rapidly innate immune responses. Moreover, TLRs also regulate systemic acquired immunity and local inflammatory responses. Recent studies have revealed that TLRs involve in the initiation, progression and recovery of various liver diseases. Progress of the studies on this area is providing new clues for treatment of the liver diseases. This article reviews the role of TLRs in pathophysiology of major liver diseases including alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver, viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
