Abstract: Peripheral nerves regenerate spontaneously after injury because of a permissive environment and activation of the intrinsic growth capacity of neurons, whereas the central nervous system usually can not regenerate. Growth capacity of injury neurons are activated by intrinsic factors such as cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), and extrinsic factors such as extracellular matrix, neurotrophins and cytokines. Here, we review the current understanding of peripheral axon regeneration and focus on intrinsic and extrinsic factors for axon regeneration.
