Research Progress on the Effects of the Active Components of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos on Cancer Cell Apoptosis

Regular cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunosuppressants, often give rise to severe immunotoxicity and increased infection risks; hence, alternative therapeutic regimens with enhanced safety profiles and proven efficacy are urgently demanded. As apoptosis remains a critical mechanistic hallmark for evaluating anticancer drug effectiveness, current studies often focus on a few isolated signaling pathways, including PI3K/AKT (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B) and MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase). As a result, these evaluations usually fail to provide a multi-pathway crosstalk view for pharmacology. Since LJF (Lonicerae japonicae Flos) contains abundant bioactive flavonoids and organic acids with apoptosis induction capacity in various cancer cells, this article comprehensively summarizes recent progress regarding LJF active components in regulating cancer cell apoptosis via multi-dimensional signaling networks and multi-target synergistic interventions here. This work aims to provide a systematic perspective to support the clinical translation of LJF-derived small molecules and the further exploration of their anticancer mechanisms.
