Abstract: As one group of leading flowers in tropical and subtropical areas, orchids are the prospective plants for gene engineering. Some aspects on genetic transformation in orchids, i.e., the successfully transformed genus and species, the methods for callus induction, the pre-treatment methods for the explants, the selecting methods for the transformed cells, the introduced foreign genes, the gene cloning, and the prospects of gene transfer in orchids were systematically reviewed.

Key words: orchids; callus; protocorm-like body; genetic transformation
